Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Gene Smith was not done with his roster when he announced his final cuts Friday night to get down to the NFL mandated 53-man roster.
Smith has continued to be active this weekend and perhaps the biggest surprise was waived/injured the athletic but often injured tight end Zach Miller.
Miller was drafted by the Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft as a former college quarterback making the transition to tight end. He was extremely athletic and showed great ball catching skills when on the field, but unfortunately for Miller and the Jaguars that was not often enough.
Miller made the Jaguars initial 53-man roster, but there were rumors that he was injured again and would likely have to spend another season on inured reserve. Now if Miller clears waivers he will revert back to the Jaguars injured reserve list.
To fill Miller’s spot on the 53-man roster, the Jaguars signed tight end Brett Brackett.
Brackett spent one week on the Jaguars practice squad last season and was just released by the Philadelphia Eagles in their final round of cuts on Friday.
The Jaguars also announced their practice squad, headlined by former Atlanta Falcons backup quarterback John Parker Wilson.
Wilson played for new Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey while he was the offensive coordinator in Atlanta.
The Jaguars also signed offensive lineman Daniel Baldridge and D.J. Hall, wide receiver Mike Brown, defensive end Ryan Davis, cornerback Antonio Dennard, linebacker Joshua Jones and fullback Will Tu’ufo’ou.
The Jaguars are expected to continue tinkering with roster throughout the holiday weekend.
