NFL Rumors: Recovery Process for Kansas City Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers Going Slower Than Hoped
The heel injury to cornerback Brandon Flowers killed the hopes of the Kansas City Chiefs avoiding the injury bug coming into the 2012 season. And now, according to a recently-surfacing rumor, it looks like it’s going to take longer than originally anticipated for Flowers to bounce back. Originally, it didn’t see much attention from the media and, thus, was perceived not to be a big deal. However, training camps are coming to a close and NFL kickoff week is looming in the not-so-distant future. Getting Flowers on the field sooner than later is going to be critical for team success. Head coach Romeo Crennel spoke to this effect, ” We’d like to get him out there so that those things can get into game shape. That’s what we need him to be. We need him to be in game shape. When that first game comes, they don’t care what kind of problems you might have had or anything like that. If you’re on the field, you’re expected to produce.”
And that also speaks to another thing. Potentially having Flowers out for the first game of the season against the Atlanta Falcons would be problematic. Two of Atlanta’s best weapons are utilized in the passing game in wide receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White. Would Kansas City be okay if Flowers didn’t make it for the season opener?
Yeah, I think the Chiefs have the weapons in the secondary to keep Matt Ryan at bay (not to mention the Chiefs pass rushing ability coming from Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, and Derrick Johnson). But still, you don’t want to have to do without one of the key parts of your secondary. I would say as long as Flowers stays off his heel until he gets to where there’s no pain, he should eventually be good to go. The problem still remaining, though, is when he’ll be ready to play again and how long it’ll take Flowers to get back to being football-ready. For the sake of fans, like me, I hope it doesn’t take too long, because I’m ready to see the true potential of the Chiefs come out full-force.
Required disclaimer concerning the Flowers recovery process: This is not confirmed, it’s just a rumor.
