Snap Reactions to the College Football Top 25 Pre-Season Coaches’ Poll
Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

As August starts, and practices around the country are due to kick off in the next couple of days, it’s an annual tradition for the College Football Top 25 Pre-Season Coaches’ Poll to be released.

Today’s the day.

Here are the Top 25 according to the Coaches’ Poll:

1. LSU (18) 13-1 1,403 2
2. Alabama (20) 12-1 1,399 1
3. Southern California (19) 10-2 1,388 NR
4. Oklahoma 10-3 1,276 15
5. Oregon 12-2 1,258 4
6. Georgia 10-4 1,061 20
7. Florida State 9-4 1,055 23
8. Michigan 11-2 1,023 9
9. South Carolina 11-2 981 8
10. Arkansas 11-2 948 5
11. West Virginia 10-3 833 18
12. Wisconsin 11-3 743 11
13. Michigan State 11-3 717 10
14. Clemson 10-4 598 22
15. Texas 8-5 549 NR
16. Nebraska 9-4 501 24
17. TCU 11-2 499 13
18. Stanford 11-2 497 7
19. Oklahoma State 12-1 476 3
20. Virginia Tech 11-3 461 17
21. Kansas State 10-3 398 16
22. Boise State 12-1 271 6
23. Florida 7-6 250 NR
24. Notre Dame 8-5 166 NR
25. Auburn 8-5 66 NR

It’s always amazing to me that this poll is released before even one day of practice has taken place and a little insight could be gleaned into what was promised from spring practices, and it looks like I’m not the only one:

You'd think preseason polls would at least wait until all the camps opened, to maintain even the fiction of analysis.

Regardless, us college football folks love to rank everything under the sun as soon as possible.

Given this penchant, here are a few of my snap observations:

  • The coaches really seem to have a LOT of faith in the Texas Longhorns. Hell, they probably have more faith in Texas than Texas fans have in Texas– and that’s saying plenty. No. 15 seems awfully generous.
  • The TCU Horned Frogs falling just two spots below the Longhorns at No. 17 is also a surprise. Sure, TCU returns plenty of talent on offense, but is it reasonable to believe they can win 11, or even 10, games in 2012 as a first-year competitor in the Big 12? NAH.
  • The three-horse race at the top of the heap is predictable. LSU, Alabama and USC are the cream of the crop this season and it will be a huge surprise if two of the three don’t meet for the national championship next January.
  • The Arkansas Razorbacks are my dark-horse to make some noise and it appear at least some of the coaches across the country are on my wavelength. If Tyler Wilson produces like we know he can and we see a healthy Knile Davis throughout the season, the Razorbacks could surprise everyone.
