Two 2014 Recruits Receive Committable Scholarship Offers from Texas Longhorns
In past years, the Texas Longhorns have been hesitant to offer “committable” scholarships to members of classes two years down the road. For some reason– be it internal or external pressures, or, just the quality of the 2014 class– this has suddenly changed.
Word has it that Texas has made committable offers to two Class of 2014 recruits this afternoon, quarterback Jerrod Heard and wide receiver Lorenzo Joe:
Both young men are first-class recruits and a primary focus for the Texas Class of 2014.
Heard, the quarterback at Denton Guyer– a program that’s developing quite a reputation for first-tier quarterback talent in recent years– is a prototypical 6’2″, 180 athlete that would fit nicely in the mold of the dynamic new Texas offense and has similar characteristics to Wichita Falls Rider product J.T. Barrett who has committed to play at Ohio State in 2013.
Lorenzo Joe is a 6’2″, 180 pound wideout from Abilene Cooper who has begun to catch the attention of coaches and recruiters not only regionally, but nationally as well. With an offer already on the table from the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the Texas staff must see enough promise in Joe to make a committable offer at this point in the process.
Have these two offers opened the flood gates on the Forty Acres, leading to more committable offers made to a class two years out than we have ever seen previously in the Mack Brown era, or, are these two guys the exception to the rule.
If it does turn out to be a trend it’ll be interesting in coming weeks to see what the impetus for it is.
Is there a new philosophy about recruiting in Austin or is it a simple matter of supply and demand in a talented class?
We don’t know just yet.
