UConn Quarterback Mike Nebrich Leaving Team
The University of Connecticut has announced a transfer situation on their football roster. Sophomore quarterback Mike Nebrich has decided to leave the program and transfer.
Nebrich, a highly touted prospect out of Virginia, saw little playing time as a freshman. He threw for 69 yards on the season, but 60 of those game in early September mop-up duty in a contest with Fordham.
The departing quarterback spoke via phone with the Hartford Courant about his decision.
“It doesn’t really have anything to do with how I was practicing or the whole playing-time aspect,” Nebrich said. “In my heart, I just felt it was the right time to go, the right move for me. So I just think personally it’s the right decision for me, to step away and try something new.”
Although Nebrich wasn’t in position to be the starter this season at quarterback — Chandler Whitmer, a transfer, was named the No. 1 heading into camp — he was in position to get many snaps in the Wildcat formation. In fact, reports has Nebrich bulking up this offseason to handle the physical rigors of running the football more out of the Wildcat formation.
According to the departing Nebrich, playing time didn’t dictate his decision.
“No, because talking with Coach [Paul] Pasqualoni and [quarterbacks coach Shane] Day it didn’t matter who was No.1 or No. 2 going into it,” Nebrich said. “I was going to see the field this year anyway, so the playing time aspect wasn’t really a factor for me. It was more of a personal issue. I just felt it was right to move on and start something new. That’s how I made the decision.”
There is no word yet on where Nebrich is heading.
