Top 2014 QB Jerrod Heard Commits to Texas Longhorns
The beat rolls on around the Forty Acres, as the Texas Longhorns have received yet another first-tier quarterback commit for the future. This time around it’s Denton Guyer signal caller, and 2014 prospect Jerrod Heard.
The 6’2″, 180 pound Heard was rated as between a four and five-star prospect by most national scouting services– take that for what it’s worth, obviously– but either way, the numbers and the upside he possesses do not lie.
A true duel-threat quarterback, Heard will continue to add fire to the conversation about the future of the position in Austin. With the arrival of two true freshmen this fall in Tatum’s Jalen Overstreet and Scottsdale, Arizona native Connor Brewer– not withstanding the 2013 arrival of Whitewright star Tyrone Swoopes–there will be no shortage of talent wearing the Burnt Orange over the course of the next few seasons.
Of course, as Texas fans have come to know, this amount of excess talent at quarterback almost always has a direct side effect– attrition.
When you consider the fact David Ash will be a senior when Jerrod Heard arrives, there could easily be five quarterbacks on the Texas roster in 2014– this, of course, assumes none of those who come before Heard transfer in search of greener pastures.
Any offensive coordinator and coaching staff would be happy to have the “problem” Texas likely faces in coming seasons with a wealth of quarterback talent to choose from, but make no mistake, it’s not all sunshine and daffodils.
Tyrone Swoopes and Jerrod Heard, by most accounts, have very similar skill sets and both Bryan Harsin and Major Applewhite will have an unenviable task on their hands to decide which guy should be handed the keys to an offense which could in due time be as high-octane as any in the country.
Will Connor Brewer be the odd man out here? It’s certainly starting to look like it.
My advice to him– take advantage of every single snap you receive.
Those snaps could disappear quickly as guys with the talent level of Swoopes and Heard walk onto the practice fields outside of Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial.
