It’s officially game day, so what kind of opening weekend would it be if there wasn’t some type of late-breaking news. The Oklahoma Sooners announced late Friday night that TE Geneo Grissom did not travel with the team to El Paso. Besides being reported on SoonerScoop.com and NewsOK, Rant Sports was one of the first to break the story.
As Stoops announced on Monday, Casey Walker also stayed in Norman due to a non-football related injury. Walker’s situation will be a week-to-week decision. The impact of both players should be a non-issue during the game tonight against UTEP. Walker is a player that the Sooners will need down the line, especially once they get into conference play. In more DT news, sources are also saying Torrea Peterson is also watching the game from Norman instead of El Paso. What does this mean? It means 3 out of 5 are out. No news yet on the Patterson reasoning. It seems that players are dropping like flies as of late.
Grissom isn’t necessarily an issue. He had never played a down as a tight end at the college level. It was a question mark when the updated depth chart was released earlier in the week when the tight ends were listed not as starters, but with the word “or” next to their names. This is Freshman Taylor McNamara‘s moment to step up and get some reps in.
On rumor patrol, there are rumblings that during the television broadcast on Fox Sports Network tonight, Sooner Network tv is going to be announced. Right now, the programming will be a regional thing (Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas) and shown on FSN. If you are in those areas, they have already started a Sooner pregame show, which will be airing most of the day between featured games. If this rumor has any legs to it, it is a pretty big weekend for Big XII related sports networks. The Longhorn Network being a part of AT&T UVerse subscribers sports line-up and possibly the Sooner Network release. Again, at the moment, this is just a rumor.
Now if only we could get the Big XII network to follow the Pac-12 Network’s lead…
