Rumor: Matt Flynn being low-balled by Miami
The Dolphins have finally gotten a big name free agent to visit their facility, but they may be putting too much stock in the relationship between quarterback Matt Flynn and new head coach Joe Philbin.
Dolphins fans have been going crazy after Yahoo’s Jason Cole posted this tweet:
The thought that the Dolphins would be gambling with their opportunity to sign the free agent quarterback is shocking to the millions of fans who have watched every big name Miami has targeted shun the team, and go elsewhere.
Flynn, who has been in Seattle for the last two days, flew into Miami Saturday morning, and has been meeting with the Dolphins’ brass, something many doubted would even happen, given the way things have been going lately in South Florida. Originally, the thought coming in to Free Agency was that Flynn coming to Miami was a no-brainer, simply because of his relationship with Philbin, but then Miami jumped into the chase for Peyton Manning, and Flynn was pushed to the back burner. That opened the door for Seattle, where Flynn also has ties to former coaching staff.
Flynn’s father, Alvin Flynn, told the Palm Beach Post that Matt had enjoyed his trip to Seattle and really liked it there, but wanted to give both teams a chance. If that is the case than there Dolphins need to be throwing everything they can at him instead of playing games, if the Jason Cole tweet is true.
The Seattle Seahawks offer much more in terms of being able to win now, than the Dolphins do. With Miami shipping Brandon Marshall out of town, the receiving core in Seattle is much more inviting to a quarterback looking at taking control of his first pro team, and the running game is much stronger there, carried on the tree trunk sized legs of Marshawn Lynch. Flynn may have to compete with Tavaris Jackson for the starting job come training camp, and it is doubtful that the Seahawks would offer as much as Miami would, but if the Dolphins are playing games, then Seattle may end up the more appealing of the two offers.
The Miami Dolphins are playing with fire. If they do not sign Matt Flynn, they are left hoping to take Ryan Tannenhill with the 8th pick. Tannenhill does have a close relationship with Offensive Coordinator Mike Sherman, and could turn out to be a quality pick, but problem is that there is nothing to say that he will still be on the board at that point. This would mean either trading up to get him, or sticking with Matt Moore, who now knows without a doubt, that he is the last person the Dolphins staff wants as their signal caller.
One other possibility came into play yesterday, with the 49ers coming forward with their interests in Peyton Manning. If San Francisco is able to sign Manning, that would leave former #1 pick, Alex Smith, looking for work. After a solid performance all of last season, Smith would not be looking for long, and the Dolphins would be certain to make a run at him.
Whatever happens, Flynn should make his choice in a timely manner, and according to Alvin, does not want to “drag this thing out”. After waiting on Peyton, that is all a fan can ask for.
