Michael Beasley Refuses to Act Professionally
I thought I would be able to go to bed in peace tonight, but Michael Beasley eliminated that idea. An ESPN text alerted me to another incident involving the Timberwolve forward. After already being arrested for marijuana possession this summer, Beasley ruined the magic of basketball at Rucker Park. A day after John Lucas III dropped 60, Beasley shoved a heckler and had to be restrained from further escalating the incident.
Michael, it’s time to grow up. If you can’t deal with hecklers in a summer league, how can you last in the NBA? It’s part of the game. Deal with it. You are testing everyone’s patience. You should take a leaf out of Derrick Rose’s book. He’s been to the All-Star game twice and has won the MVP once. You were once in consideration to be drafted ahead of him, and now look at you. You spend more time in the news for the wrong reasons rather than basketball. I admit that Beasley is still very young, but come on. This behavior would not be tolerated in the working world, and it sure is not tolerated in basketball. Attacking fans is not acceptable, ever.
I recently wrote an article claiming Beasley wasn’t expendable. Right now, I think Minnesota should sever ties with him. It’s just bad publicity. His coach is quoted as saying “I couldn’t stop him.” Michael, that is just plain awful. You are an ambassador for the NBA and Minnesota. The last thing the NBAPA needs is bad publicity. You just helped confirm a lot of people’s misguided beliefs about NBA players. Many believe that NBA players and athletes in general are ungrateful and incapable of being professional. You didn’t do much to dispel that idea.
If David Kahn can get a good deal for Beasley, he needs to trade him. However, I’m not sure anyone would touch him right now. Having potential is one thing, but if you can’t trust a player to behave in a summer league, how can you trust him to carry your team in the future?
