Vikings RB Toby Gerhart Ready for OTAs after MCL Tear
Minnesota Vikings running back Toby Gerhart says he’s ready for organized team activities, which begin on May 29th. This of course is great news for Vikings fans, as Gerhart figures to be a crucial piece to the team’s success in 2012.
“I should be able to do everything once we get back,” said Gerhart. “I’m still strengthening the quad, and the MCL has healed on its own. The key is just doing more running. I still get a little soreness when I run, but that goes away the next day. I’m on track.”
Gerhart suffered the MCL tear in the Vikings season finale against the Chicago Bears. The injury was never considered serious, as surgery was not required to repair the damage.
2012 will be the most important season of Gerhart’s young NFL career, as he will be asked to carry more of the load in the backfield. Adrian Peterson is reportedly on schedule to play week 1 for the Vikes, but there is no way he’s going to be at 100%. Even if somehow he is, the coaches will still limit his carries, coming off major knee surgery. Obviously, those carries will go Toby Gerhart.
With the increase in carries he should receive, I see no reason Gerhart couldn’t average 50 yards rushing per game this season. He’s shown his potential during his first 2 seasons, and the conditions are right for a breakout year. It’s imperative that Gerhart is at full strength for the start of 2012, and from the sounds of his comments, it seems that fans have nothing to worry about.
