When Bud Selig and his MLB brian trust came up with the idea to add an additional Wild Card slot for each division no one could have imagined that we would have been witnesses to what we are seeing take place this September. Each and every single night (and day) that there is baseball being played there is something magical taking place.
There are currently 14 teams I am scoreboard watching on nightly basis wondering if the team ahead of them or behind them has won or loss thus increasing or decreasing their own chances of making it to the postseason. In the American League the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angeles are all fighting for five playoff spots and a chance to enter baseball’s ultimate postseason tournament for a chance to reach the World Series.
In the National League the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers are all battling tooth and nail for just two slots in the side of the bracket. Last September was considered special with all of the drama that took place during the final month of the season but this year’s version of the hunt for October has out-trumped it by leaps and bounds and we’re only halfway through.
Walk-off win after walk-off win, nip-tuck games and extra inning thrillers have provided us all something new and exciting to talk about every single day and the excitement won’t be going away anytime soon. It will only carry on all the way through the entire postseason, giving the super power which is know as the NFL a true run for their money.
If Selig knew that this was going to be the result of adding one more playoff spot in each league then not only is he a genius but he may go down as the most intelligent visionary to ever run a professional sports league. I can’t wait to see what happens tonight!!!
