Last week is was made known that Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest‘s job was in some serious jeopardy about a week ago but the rumor that Beinfest could be the one out of job in the Marlins front office may only be that, a mere rumor.
The rumor was that Beinfest was going to get canned at the end of the season after being in the Marlins’ front office since the 2002 season and that Dan Jennings was going to get the promotion. Now, it seems like nobody is going to get a promotion and all the heat has been turned to manager Ozzie Guillen. Before Beinfest was presumed safe, Guillen was the one that was safe and the current president of baseball operations was going to take the hit for the failures the club has committed this season.
It may not be the case anymore.
Names from former Marlins third baseman Mike Lowell to former Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros catcher Brad Ausmus have already been named as possible replacements for Guillen and he has not even finished his first full year with the team. Other names in the mix, Washington Nationals third base coach Bo Porter and Toronto Blue Jays Single-A manager Tim Redmond. The team is reportedly looking for a young, inexpensive replacement.
If Guillen does get canned, he has been part of the Marlins’ problem this season. His outlandish comments about Fidel Castro and Blue Jays shortshop Yunel Escobar‘s eye black have been unwarranted but not out of character for him. The team knew exactly what they were getting when they hired Guillen. But you cannot make Guillen a scapegoat for the entire team.
The Marlins are one of the league’s worst teams at 66-86 and could be swept by the New York Mets Sunday. The poor hitting and the lack of desire to win is what has plagued this team since June. Better players and a better character is what will help this team win.
