Last week, the New York Mets looked absolutely deflated and defeated after getting swept by the Philadelphia Phillies, culminating in a 16-1 drubbing that left everyone questioning if they had quit on their manager and fans. That series seemed to not only embarrass them, but forced the players to do a little bit of soul searching about their purpose on the field.
Forge ahead four games later and these same Mets have now won four in a row at home for only the second time this season and have separated themselves from the Miami Marlins and the basement of the NL East. After sweeping the Marlins and getting R.A. Dickey his 19th win in the process, the hitting continued in their first game against the fading Pittsburgh Pirates. Now, all we have left to do is wonder if they had quit all along or just was in the midst of the worst slump a team has ever gone through together.
Let me just point out that these Mets had no expectations whatsoever going into 2012. They played well above their heads for the first half, but it was baffling how the faucet just turned off all at once in the second half. One thing is for certain is that this team shows that when they want to, they can play the game the right way. That is all you can ask of any team, and the Mets need to keep their focus over the last few games. The next step is getting Dickey his 20th win on Thursday and basically securing the CY Young award for the knuckleballer.
At least for these two home stands, the Mets have once again given some hope to the fans, and Terry Collins can relax and not entertain the same redundant questions that have been wearing him down over the past couple months.
Mets Notes: David Wright is now only two hits away from tying Ed Kranepool for the all-time Mets lead in hits. Jennry Mejia pitched his first ever MLB win going 5IP, 4H, 0ER, 2BB and 4SO.
