The Kansas City Royals recently announced their promotional lineup for 2013 and in addition to the hopes of on-field success, the Royals do have some excellent looking giveaways to make the decision about to which games to go (seeing as ‘all of them’ is not really an option for the vast majority of us, however nice it would be) that much easier.
One of the recurring promotions for the Royals is the Salute to the Negro Leagues Night, usually just called after the old Kansas City Monarchs. Kansas City is of course home to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the legacy of the Negro Leagues and of the Monarchs is one of the defining parts of the history of baseball in Kansas City. The Monarchs, with their ten league titles, remain Kansas City’s most successful team in any sport.
The Royals traditionally honor this legacy by wearing throwback Monarchs uniforms during a game and this year they will be giving away a ‘vintage’ Monarchs t-shirt as well. In years past it has been a replica Monarchs cap. This year the game is on August 24th against the Washington Nationals who will be wearing the uniforms of the Washington Homestead Grays. In addition to getting to the always excellent tribute to the Negro Leagues then, fans going to the game will get to see the best team in the National League in 2012, which should be a considerable draw by itself. The only downside to this is that it occurs so late in the year, the June or July dates are a bit more appealing.
