It happens all the time. Not perfect games, they are pretty rare actually. What happens often is that when a pitcher throws one, he tends to struggle for a while afterwards. There could be tons of reasons for it but the main one probably is something about trying too hard to repeat the performance that was perfect. Sometimes it can ruin whole months of a season for a pitcher. Texas Rangers starter Yu Darvish got the worst of both worlds this season.
Not only did he miss the perfect game by one out, he still is going through the afterwards struggle. So, even though he didn’t pitch a perfect game, a perfect 26 batters faced is worse. Now he really has been trying to repeat the same work so he could finish perfectly. It is only natural to assume that is why he has struggled some recently. That isn’t to say he has been getting knocked all over the park, he just can do better.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux knows a thing or two about repeating the same exact motion for years at a time from watching his brother be successful at it. He has studied film and apparently found a little adjustment they could make. Darvish will go out tonight against the Seattle Mariners team that touched him up for three runs in a short outing last time. We’ll see if he can regain his perfect form, which is not to say he will pitch a perfect game. He just needs to perfectly repeat the same motion and arm speed. The rest will take care of itself.
