On Monday night, the Atlanta Braves announced that star outfielder Jason Heyward underwent an emergency appendectomy, but the procedure was successful and performed at the Rose Medical Center in Denver.
While appendectomies come in surprise fashion, it was ironic enough that the Braves’ game with the Colorado Rockies was postponed on Monday due to inclement weather. So it’s not like this unfortunate situation erupted right after the game or something.
Heyward, who is 23 years old, has no timetable for a recovery at this moment.

In the past however, baseball players that have had to undergo this sort of emergency surgery have been able to return to act within 1-2 weeks. We have seen it happen to guys like Matt Holiday and Adam Dunn in year’s past.
Heyward is off to a very sluggish start for the Braves this season, batting .121 through the team’s first 18 games. Heyward has recorded two home runs and driven in five RBIs. Even with Heyward struggling, the Braves are currently tied for the best record in baseball at 13-5 overall. Ironically enough, the team that they are currently tied is also their opponent this week in Denver.
At this point, Braves’ fans must sit tight and wait for Heyward to get healthy yet again. There is nothing that Atlanta can do at this point other than hope Heyward can return to the lineup either this weekend or sometime next week.
