Philadelphia Phillies: Boo-Birds Have Flown The Coop

The click grew faster than a half-baked stock on the New York exchange. When a big wave hit the red pinstriped yacht last summer, all fair-weather Philadelphia Phillies‘ fans jumped into their green lifeboats. Of course, they collectively sank before reaching shore as well.

“Let’s go Eagles!”

That obnoxious bark could often be heard back in the bad old days when the Phillies stank worse than an ex-girlfriend’s horrible excuse for Sunday dinner. A gathered mob of mostly college-aged kids used to shift their in-game allegiance to the local football team, regardless of what month it was, during every down moment in any game. Their verbal statements obviously fueled by expensive liquid spirits that had seeped into their brains.

Thinking about forcibly swallowing Sally’s stew after another weekend loss was bad enough. Hearing a bunch of non-baseball fans pollute Veterans Stadium and later Citizens Bank Park (pre-2007), was nothing short of wrong.

This year the atmosphere at the best Philadelphia baseball palace in history, or among real baseball fans who exchange their away-game thoughts, is filled with enough nervous energy to meet every eco-friendly goal.

No, “Go Green!” isn’t a football chant.

This Phillies’ squad has produced a few good efforts this season. The 4-0 win against the New York Mets on April 26 was one of them. But, every hardcore fan knows that the current 2013 roster isn’t nearly deep enough to compete with the National League’s best teams.

The immediate future might be rough. If real improvement in the win column isn’t seen by this time next month, even longtime fans might consider taking a peek at the upcoming football schedule.
