Chicago White Sox Start May Off With A Bang

Chicago White Sox

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

I’m not sure the Chicago White Sox could have played any worse in the month of April. Although their dismal 10-15 mark in the season’s first month was unexpected, the way they lost most of their games was what shocked me most.

After leading the entire MLB in defense and committing just 70 errors a season ago, the White Sox struggled to make the most routine plays during April. Chicago has already committed 18 errors this season, and are on pace to commit over 100 errors in 2013. The Sox also suffered at the plate in April and finished near the bottom of MLB in many offensive categories.

Thankfully, April is over and the Sox were able to start the month of May off with a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers.

Chris Sale pitched seven quality innings and picked up his third win of 2013. Closer Addison Reed was also able to record his ninth save of the year. The nice showing by the Pale Hose young arms was great to see, but that wasn’t what stood out the most to me Wednesday night in Texas.

For what seemed like the first time all season, the Sox were faced with some adversity and were able to withstand it.

After grabbing an early 2-0 lead, the Sox let the Rangers tie it right back up in the second. Instead of letting this affect them the rest of the game — like they had been doing all of April — Chicago battled back and eventually won the game.

The Sox showed more guts and fight Wednesday than they had for most of the first month of the season. With the horrible month of April in their rear-view mirror, Chicago will hope to continue to find a way to grind out wins like they did on Wednesday night.
