When the Arizona Diamondbacks acquired reliever Heath Bell in the off-season from the Miami Marlins, this move perplexed people as to why would Arizona make this deal.
Well, Arizona knew they were obtaining the services of a pitcher who has displayed in his career the ability to get those last three crucial outs in the ninth inning of a ballgame, as indicated by the 155 saves he has accumulated in his career.
The other reason they went after Bell was so that he could serve as an insurance policy for closer J.J. Putz, as an injury can flare up anytime as a pitcher becomes older. They cashed in that policy in Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Putz faced one batter, and it was apparent after that there was something wrong with him. He has had problems finishing off games this season for the Diamondbacks as he already has blown four saves.
This injury could have been the main reason for those struggles. The best thing that Arizona can do for Putz is to let him rest and not have him worry about pitching. They have other pitchers that are capable of finishing off games for the team.
The reliever that will get the bulk of the save opportunities for Arizona is Bell, but they also have David Hernandez or Matt Reynolds at their disposal. This is not the first time that Putz has had an injury with Arizona, and the performance of the Diamondbacks was not affected the last time he went down.
Arizona will be in good shape until Putz returns because they have the personnel to deal with this injury.
