The Arizona Diamondbacks have shown the variety of ways that they can defeat opposing teams this season in the first two games against the Miami Marlins. Arizona slugged their way to victory in the first game by having everyone in the line up giving a contribution.
Then in the second game, they received all the offense they would need on one swing from outfielder Gerardo Parra. Starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy continued from the success that he had in his last start and dominated this game from the first inning on.
McCarthy had his fair share of struggles at the beginning of the season, but after these last two starts, he has put the issues that hindered his success behind him.
He showed great concentration in this start, and he needed to because he received very little run support. This did not seem to affect him as he has now thrown 17 consecutive scoreless innings over his last two starts.
This is a pleasant surprise, because he had been the lone member of the starting rotation that had yet to earn a victory this season. For McCarthy, it took him longer than the Arizona would have preferred, but he is performing exactly how they believed that he could.
The Diamondbacks are finally getting great performances from all of the starters in their rotation, and it is no coincidence that they are winning more games because of this. The offense is starting to get better, but it will be their pitching that propels them to a playoff berth this season.
