Anyone that has read more than one or two of my articles this year knows that I have said more than once Brandon Phillips, second baseman of the Cincinnati Reds, has a great chance of being MVP this year and any year in the future. Though Phillips is certainly a top notch second baseman and obviously someone that has been in the top few of MVP voting before, you rarely hear him brought up in the conversation. His numbers are good and getting better right now and yes, he deserves MVP consideration.
If we take a close look it will be difficult not to notice the fact that he has driven in 40 runs to lead his team. It always hurts a player when their team isn’t among those fighting for a playoff spot but the Reds are right there in the thick of the National League Central and seem to be an ever-present thorn in the St. Louis Cardinals side. So that is a check. He only has seven homers and his batting average dips a little under the .300 mark.

Looking for a reason not to pick Phillips would definitely take you right passed these guys which prove that Phillips is in consideration for sure. What is interesting to note is that earlier in the season I was about the only person talking about her in that MVP breath. Now more than me are saying it for the way that she led her team through a rough spot while not slumping badly himself. I’m not saying that Jay Bruce and Joey Votto aren’t valuable and possibly even more valuable to the Reds. It just seems to me that Phillips means a great deal more to the Reds than he appears to upon first glance. If his numbers continue to improve at the rate they have thus far he will be impossible to look passed by the end of the season.
