It isn’t a secret that the Houston Astros are having a rough season. They are at the bottom of the American League West and at the bottom of all of Major League Baseball for the most part. Every dark cloud has a silver lining as they say and for the Astros that silver lining is manager Bo Porter. Porter was brought in this season to begin the big task of rebuilding the Astros young team, or at least to lead the on the field portion of it. The Astros could not have made a better choice.
From the beginning of spring training I have loved the approach of Porter. Even after losing nine of nine to the Oakland Athletics he clearly states the truth about the negative things going on and at the same time points out the positives they can take from the loss. He is an encouraging and fun manager that takes the game seriously but not too seriously. I think the best display of how good he is can be seen in the way the Astros are off the field. You haven’t heard one single problem all season from that clubhouse.
I think a lot of that credit should go to Porter. The third base coach for the Washington Nationals before coming to the managerial job, Porter makes the job look as if it were made for him. I don’t know how many years or months of struggle the Astros will have before they hit their big turning point but I know it will be less time than it would have been without Porter. He is absolutely perfect for the job and will be the right man to lead them for many years to come. Here is hoping team management keeps their heads screwed on straight and sees clearly the value Porter brings to the team.
