Being a manager might be one of the most thankless jobs in all of sports.
People like me tend to believe that managers have little actually effect on a baseball game, because I feel that baseball is a game that can be quantified by numbers more than feel more often than not.
On the other hand, many people think that a manager can have an effect on a team based on how they handle things, like the clubhouse for example. Well, if you are one of those people who believe in a player’s manager or a clubhouse guy, then I can’t see how you can argue against Ron Washington as American Manager of the year for the quarter-season.
As far as X’s and O’s go, I can’t help but think Washington is one of the worst in baseball, considering his batting orders hardly ever make sense. But I cannot really argue with the results the Texas Rangers have put up so far this year.
With the departure of their “best” player, Josh Hamilton and their team captain Michael Young, many thought that the Rangers would be looking up at the rivals in the standings this season. However, here we are on May 31, 2013 and the Rangers are in first place again, trying to fight off another pesky Oakland Athletics team.
With Washington’s continued success, I guess I am willing to admit that my stance on managing is pretty ignorant and most likely wrong. Having said that, however, Joe Girardi would be the type of manager I would want leading my team, and he would probably be my second choice for manager of the year.
So, in closing, I guess it’s safe to say that there isn’t one person who knows the effect a manager has on a team, and we probably never will.
