It isn’t exactly a secret that Chris Davis and the Baltimore Orioles have quite the explosive offense. They don’t blow up the scoreboard every game but they are certainly fully capable of throwing a ton of runs up very quickly. That hasn’t been the case so far in the Tampa Bay Rays series. They have scored only one run and already lost the series. Sunday they will have to try to salvage one game to avoid the sweep against one of the Rays’ finest pitchers.
The thing is, it’s not surprising that someone could shut down the Orioles. What is surprising is that the Rays have done it so effectively two days in a row with two pitchers that are not exactly the ace of their staff. There have been teams that are easily shut down by pitchers that aren’t on a roll but those offenses are the polar opposite of the Orioles. Their power alone usually will be good for a four or five run performance against a struggling pitcher.
Whatever the reason for their offensive drought, it seems to only have happened in the series against the Rays. Chances are the O’s will come out Sunday and score double-digits or something just to prove they can. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see a grand-slam on their side of the box score as a matter of fact. What would shock me is to see them swept cleanly by the Rays with yet another dominating pitching performance.
