Chicago Cubs Looking Great so far During MLB Trade Season

Matt Garza

It might not seem like there is a lot to get excited about in Chicago Cubs land right now but that couldn’t be more wrong. Actually there is a lot of stuff going well for the Cubbies right now and it looks to be getting better. They have made some simple trades that got rid of dead weight or added strong current or potential players. Also they are playing better having won 6 of their last 10 games including a recent series win against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The elephant in the room for the Cubs is the situation surrounding pitcher Matt Garza. For the Cubs the situation just gets better with each start Garza makes. He makes another one Monday against the Chicago White Sox. The great part about Garza’s performance of late is that the Cubs find themselves in a win-win situation. If they elect to trade Garza they will undoubtedly get a great package in return because of the last few outings and the success they have brought Garza.

On the other hand they could elect to try an extension with Garza though that could be a slippery slope. There is no guarantee that he will stay healthy or keep pitching as well as he is right now. If they extend his contract then they take all of the risk while trading him would give them little risk and more chance at reward. For that reason alone I would hope they trade him before the deadline and get themselves a nice return that will go even further towards preparing this team to be better in the next year or two. At this point it seems to be going well enough for them that I think only team management could mess it up.
