The New York Yankees are traveling home with an enigma that they haven’t had in the Bronx all season– Alex Rodriguez. The Yanks are hosting the Detroit Tigers tonight, and A-Rod will make his season debut at Yankee Stadium. The outcome of the game is an insignificant factor, because the Yankees are most likely out of the running for a postseason spot. But what is highly anticipated is how the home fans will react when Rodriguez finally takes the field.
A-Rod is a tumultuous headcase, and for his entire career all he wanted was to be adored by fans. Unfortunately, he has made some major mistakes that have forever tarnished his legacy. No matter how hard he tried, he never became a true Yankee. All of the drama and controversy was only enhanced by the New York media, and even Rodriguez’s clever public relations team couldn’t twist a headline that made him look like his glass was half full. He also should have taken the 211 game suspension that he appealed because this season is lost, and no matter how old and diminished he would be, the Yanks somehow always reload and could be contenders in 2015.

All that being said, Yankees fans should cheer Rodriguez when he puts on the home pinstripes for the first time this year. No matter how many times he has screwed up, he’s not a bad person. He’s clearly repeated his mistakes, but he loves the game of baseball and let the away crowds do what they please. Yankees fans should not embrace him but at least give him a polite welcome. If fans find it hard to cheer for a person who will be making a hell-of-a-lot-more money than they are when he is severely overpaid, remember the 2009 playoffs when he carried the Yanks to a World Series Championship.
