5 Biggest Detroit Tigers September Call-Ups

.
Ken Blaze- USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Tigers are not the Houston Astros which means that they will not be calling up the entire state of Texas to come play baseball for them in September. But that doesn't mean that the added space in roster size isn't going to be of value to the Tigers. The Tigers have decided to make strategic call-ups in place of a maximum overflow of people which will hopefully allow for fewer players but with bigger impact.

This next month will see some new faces and some recycled faces you may or may not want to have ever seen again (cough Phil Coke cough). The fact is each one of these call-up players could have a very serious impact on playoff positioning, and if they perform well enough they may just have an impact in the actual postseason. When September rolls around and the everyday players begin to wear down the added roster size is a huge tool for any team to use, and it is no different for the Tigers organization.

So as we look at the 5 biggest September call-ups that the Detroit Tigers have decided to make, keep in mind that while some of the names aren't flashy and maybe won't contribute to the team on an everyday basis, they each have the potential to sway how this team plays in this last crucial month before the playoffs come roaring in. As we have seen recently, injuries can occur at any time and you need to have a bench that is prepared and ready to step in to get the job done.

Luke Putkonen adds to the Detroit Tigers by giving them yet another last name that is hard to spell, but he also adds depth to a bullpen in such desperate need of help they posted a want ad on Craigslist.

Danny Worth has struggled in his previous experiences up with the Tigers, but one injury to Jose Iglesias or Omar Infante and all of the sudden he becomes a very important part of this team.

3. Phil Coke

Phil Coke never leaves. He is like the beetle juice to the Detroit Tigers, and sadly Jim Leyland said his name three times. Still, could he possibly regain his form from last postseason and help strengthen the Tigers? Don't hold your breath.

2. Evan Reed

Evan Reed thought he didn't deserve to be sent down to the minors, and Jim Leyland agreed. Now it's time for Evan Reed to prove that he was right by putting up the type of stunning numbers he did a few months ago. If he can then he has a chance to stay in the pen through the postseason.

1. Nick Castellanos

Of course No. 1 has to be Nick Castellanos. Have I said how good this kid is? If he ends the days of Andy Dirks in the outfield I think most Detroit Tigers fans will collapse with excitement. A lot is expected and we will see if he is ready to be the star right out of the gate or if it is going to take some time.
