Jason Vargas has been on a hot streak over his last two starts but that isn’t the only streak on the line as the Los Angeles Angels go up against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. Vargas is riding two dominant starts in a row and has had a good season overall around the injury problems he has had. The Angels are riding a five game winning streak against the Rays five game losing streak. For the Angels, as long as everyone’s streak keeps going tonight, all is well.
It has been said that the Angels are in a good position to be playoff spoilers this season and that is on full display as they continue to win games. They are facing the Rays again on Tuesday who have lost five in a row. The American League wildcard race is getting very tight and it can get much tighter over the next day or two if the Angels continue their win streak and the Rays losing streak. It seems like a pretty simple thing but I would bet it feels like a playoff series win to the Angels at this point.
Overall the Angels really have only had a couple of bad months. The problem is that the bad months were really bad. Now that we are in the final month of the season and all of the pressure is off of them, they seem to be playing much better. Playing well at this time of the year and being out of the playoff picture means a team can really enjoy trying to knock other teams out of the playoffs. The Angels are all over that right now as their continued winning trend is playing havoc with the wildcard picture. I say good for them.
