The Boston Red Sox must have watched the American League Wild Card game between the Oakland Athletics and the Kansas City Royals very intently. Not only was it a thriller, but it also featured two free agent ace starting pitchers in James Shields and Jon Lester. In a way, this was a great showcase for the abundance of suitors that both pitchers will have.
I have grown to like Shields, although I still think he is a little overrated and doesn’t have quite enough of a track record to be called “Big Game.” He is durable and does have a lot of presence, so if Boston did end up with him, it wouldn’t be too upsetting. However, Boston needs to go after the ace they already know, Lester.
Let’s face facts. The Red Sox blew it during Spring Training when they offered Lester a ridiculously low contract, which basically killed any hope of Boston re-signing him. They did do the smart thing and trade him to get something of value. That was a great trade, and it will be very exciting to hopefully see Yoenis Cespedes in a Boston uniform for the entire year.
Boston has admitted that they have a ton of money that they are willing to spend. If they have any hope of contending, they need an ace. They know about Lester’s makeup and that he can pitch in Boston, and yes, he will cost more money than they may want to spend, but they know what they are getting. I think that if Boston even comes close in years and money, Lester will come back.
Lester has had the best year of his career, and Boston probably would have spent money on him anyways. Break the bank and get him back here; it would make 2015 look even better.
