The Boston Red Sox had a completely dismal 2014 season. One of the few bright spots, however, was the pitching performance of Andrew Miller. He has gone from being a complete washout as a starter to one of the most intimidating relievers in all of the MLB.
You better believe a lot of teams took notice, and especially when Boston made him available on the trade market. The Baltimore Orioles gave up one of their prized pitching prospects for what could amount to about three months of Miller in a Baltimore uniform. Miller is going to be a free agent at the end of this season and he will certainly command top dollar.
It appears as though Miller wants to come back to Boston or at the very least is extremely open to the idea. However, considering this is his first experience in free agency, he will probably want to test the market as much as possible. There will be teams like the Detroit Tigers or the Los Angeles Dodgers that could desperately use him in their bullpen.
Boston, however, makes a lot of sense for him to return. The Red Sox, while they love Koji Uehara, know about his age and might want to have as many closer types around as possible. If Uehara stumbles, Miller could easily step in as the closer. Perhaps they could work in tandem, along with Edward Mujica. That could make for a very dangerous bullpen.
As well, the Boston organization helped Miller revitalize his career. I do feel that there is some loyalty there with Miller. Perhaps I am dreaming, but it would be great to see Miller, and Jon Lester, back in Red Sox uniforms for next year.
