MLB Rumors: Top 5 Landing Spots For Chase Headley In 2015
Andy Marlin- USA TODAY Sports
After seeing time with the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees in 2014, Chase Headley is set to hit the open market this offseason for the first time. Though his .243/.328/.372 line in 2014 was nothing great, Headley remained one of the most elite defensive third basemen in the league. Because of his defense, he will find an everyday job for himself this offseason. With that in mind, here's a look at his top five potential landing spots.

Aramis Ramirez has manned third base for the Brewers the past three years, but he has a mutual option for 2015. Mutual options are rarely exercised by both the club and player, which means that Ramirez seems likely to hit the open market this offseason. If he indeed hits becomes a free agent, the Brewers will need a third baseman, and Headley will make sense as an everyday guy who is cheaper than the likes of Hanley Ramirez.
4. San Francisco Giants

Like the Brewers, the Giants will lose their everyday third baseman this offseason in Pablo Sandoval. Extension talks with Sandoval have not gone well, and it seems likely that they will turn to another option next season. Headley will be intriguing to the Giants as a replacement, and his defense might actually give them an upgrade. Over the last three years, Headley has bested Sandoval in fWAR each season.
3. Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox need to do something to get past their rough 2014 season, and adding a third baseman is one way they can upgrade the team. Will Middlebrooks has not hit well the last two years, and he cannot stay healthy. The Red Sox also seem content with keeping Xander Bogaerts at shortstop, so adding Headley would fill what has become a hole for the club.
2. New York Yankees

With Headley a free agent this offseason, the Yankees all of a sudden do not have a clear option at third. Of course, Alex Rodriguez is set to return, but his role with the club remains unclear, as even if he returns to full form he's more suited at first base or DH. Headley would give the Yankees a defensive boost, something that they desperately need to have in order to help out a pitching staff that struggled in 2014.

The Blue Jays were in contention for most of 2014 before falling off at the end of the year. Still, they will return a good part of the team in 2015, and a signing or two might be what they need to return to the playoffs. Their biggest hole is either second or third base, with Brett Lawrie a lock to occupy one of the two. Thus, Headley seems like the type of mid-level guy they can afford who would provide the team with an upgrade.
