Most baseball fans had a good idea of what to expect in Game 5 of the World Series. After all, James Shields and Madison Bumgarner squared off just five days ago in the Fall Classic opener.
In Game 1 both pitchers continued their 2014 postseason trends. Shields was shaky, while Bumgarner was dominate. Game 5 didn’t exactly play out the same way, but the end result was the same. The San Francisco Giants are now up 3-2 on the Kansas City Royals after a complete game shutout from Bumgarner.
The Giants’ ace controlled Game 5 just like he did Game 1, and now without a shadow of a doubt is the front-runner for WS MVP. Who else could it really be if San Francisco wins? Maybe Hunter Pence? But Bumgarner has been the difference in this series.
The silver lining for the Royals is that they’re likely done with MadBum. However, the wounds they’ve received from the current ace of aces could still prove to be fatal…
Another takeaway from Game 5 is that it will likely be the last time Shields takes the mound for the Royals. The free-agent-to-be isn’t expected to get the type of offer he’s looking for from KC, and the odds are that he will move on to the highest bidder. But after the way he’s pitched for the majority of the 2014 playoffs, you have to wonder what kind of offers he’ll receive on the open market. His stock is definitely down from where it was a month ago.
