Former No. 1 prospect in all of baseball, St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras is dead at the age of 22. The news is sending shockwaves throughout the MLB community as people struggle to deal with the idea that such a young and talented player could be gone.
This really puts life in perspective. Everyone always talks about injuries to players, but when something like this happens that is so final, it can shock everyone. It’s a tragedy in every sense of the word. Whether you’re a Cardinals fan or not, your heart should go out to the family and friends of the talented outfielder.
Taveras played his first majority of a season in the major leagues this year and while he struggled for portions of the season as a part-time outfielder, his promise was never in doubt. In all likelihood, he was set to be a full-time outfielder next year for the Cardinals. He joins a list of tragic deaths in the major leagues including such players as Roberto Clemente, Darryl Kile and Nick Adenhart. While the Cardinals haven’t commented on the situation yet, they’re sure to do something for the fallen young star.
The next time you’re complaining about anything in your life, think about things like this that happen all the time outside of sports. Even the most promising of athletes can have everything taken from them in an instant. Just like that, everything can be gone. Appreciate all you have as you reflect on one of baseball’s biggest tragedies in quite some time.
