Few things are as important in the baseball world as the World Series, but life is certainly one of them. In the midst of Game 5, reports confirmed that St. Louis Cardinals outfielder and consensus no. 2 prospect in baseball, Oscar Taveras, has been killed in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic:

At just 22-years-old, Taveras had rocketed through the Cardinals’ system, and was poised to compete for a starting job in the outfield going into the season. The news was confirmed by Brian Mejia, Taveras’ agent, and no other details are available at this time. While the World Series continues between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals, baseball fans around the world certainly have a justified reason to tune out of the game right now.
