The San Francisco Giants are the team that’s so good, that they somehow turn fans off. The 2014 World Series ratings reflect that.
In some ways you can compare the Giants of the last five years to the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA. They don’t drive the ratings needle, but man, are they good at what they do.
Whereas it’s tough to say the modern day Spurs are a basketball dynasty, given the years between their titles, it’s much easier to say the 2010 to 2014 Giants are indeed a dynasty. Even though they missed the playoffs in 2011 and 2013, we’re still talking about a team that’s won three out of the last five World Series.
There’s definitely been some roster overturn in San Francisco since the team’s championship run in 2010, but overall, the heart of the franchise has remained intact. And shouldn’t we give the Giants a little more wiggle room when it comes to the dynasty label in today’s era of free agency and constant wheeling-and-dealing?
No matter where you draw the dynasty line, there’s little debate about how good the Giants were this postseason. Specifically, Hunter Pence, Pablo Sandoval and World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner. MadBum went on a playoff run for the ages this fall. The guy was basically unhittable on the biggest stage, and has been for much of his young career. He was the best player in the 2014 postseason by a mile.
You may not like them. You may think they’re boring. But you have to tip your baseball cap to the 2014 World Series champion San Francisco Giants. And given that Bumgarner is just 25-years old, and that Bruce Bochy should be in the San Francisco dugout for a few more years, you can bet that the Giants aren’t done yet.
