Zack Greinke Should Win 2014 NL Pitcher Gold Glove

The Los Angeles Dodgers may have disappointed many followers when they fell to the St. Louis Cardinals in this year’s NLDS. Winning Gold Gloves won’t erase those memories, but one of the pitchers on this talented roster should be the NL winner for pitchers. And no, his name is not Clayton Kershaw.

Zack Greinke is the best choice for the NL Gold Glove for pitchers on the basis of one category alone. First, let’s take a look at the other two candidates.

Kershaw is an enigma at this spot. For starters, he has a .951 fielding percentage, which is lower than other high-profile pitchers like Johnny Cueto or Jordan Zimmermann. He also committed two errors and had just eight putouts. I hate to burst Kershaw’s bubble even further given his meltdown in the postseason, but this award will not likely be his. Adam Wainwright is a deserving candidate in part due to his 20 putouts and crisp fielding that helped the Cardinals to a berth in the NLCS.

Then there is Greinke, who was a part of eight Dodgers double plays. Most pitchers are lucky to field one or two double plays a season. The next highest number on this list, five, belongs to Miami Marlins hurler Henderson Alvarez. Being a part of eight double plays is a hard task for a pitcher to accomplish. It is for that reason alone Greinke deserves the Gold Glove when it is handed out on Nov. 11.
