Like many other possible 2015 contenders, the New York Yankees are interested in free agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval, but also like many other teams, the Yankees will not bite on the $100-plus million Sandoval will be seeking this offseason. For that reason, New York intends to safely pursue Chase Headley.
After his career year in 2012, Headley has failed to reach remotely close to similar numbers. In fact, the 2012 season was very un-Headley like when looking at his seven-year career, which is why he should be thankful the Yankees are interested in keeping him around long-term. Even though his numbers were not eye-popping after being dealt to New York, they were still good enough for the Yankees to feel he can be a positive member of the team going forward.
The 30-year-old batted .262 with six home runs, 17 RBI, eight doubles and .769 OPS in 191 at-bats with New York. Even if the statistics seem less than ideal, which they certainly are, the fact is Headley played far better with the Yankees in 58 games than he did with the San Diego Padres since the start of the 2013 season. For that reason, there is plenty of hope New York is the place to be.
With Headley most likely to play third base for the Yankees next season, Alex Rodriguez will be confined to a designated hitter role. The team has also suggested playing him at first base at times. Of course, this will only happen if Rodriguez is physically able to play the game after taking a year off for his suspension.
