With their recent moves, the Milwaukee Brewers‘ lineup and rotation appear to be set for 2015. But after seeing the display of bullpen dominance in the postseason, the team could always use an extra arm. With the team looking to compete and contend in 2015, the biggest free agent piece that would be a perfect fit is Andrew Miller.
Even with the probable loss of Zach Duke and Francisco Rodriguez, the Brewers have a solid set of arms in their current bullpen. With players like Jim Henderson and Tyler Thornburg expected to return from injury, the team will bring back a solid core that includes Will Smith, Jeremy Jeffress, Brandon Kintzler and Jonathan Broxton. While this is a strong group, the addition of Miller would make the Brewers very tough to beat late in games.
Last season with both the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles, Miller enjoyed his best season of his career. In 73 appearances, Miller went 5-5 with a 2.02 ERA and was just as unhittable in the playoffs. His intimidating 6-foot-7 frame helped him strike out 103 batters in 62.1 innings pitched. Perhaps most impressive was his .808 WHIP. When he pitches, opposing batters rarely see first base.
Miller is sure to see draw a lot of interest this offseason from teams like the Orioles, Red Sox and even the hated St. Louis Cardinals, and he could very well get paid closer money. However, that doesn’t mean the Brewers have no chance in acquiring him. In his tenure in Milwaukee, Doug Melvin has been known to be bold by making moves that no one expected. He could very well make that type of move again this winter.
When the Brewers were at their best in 2011, they were touchable with a late lead. If they were to bring in Miller, their bullpen would become something to fear. With much of the roster set, this move could be the splash that puts the team over the top.
