In today’s day and age with nine-figure free agent contracts, guaranteed money and trades, it is a rarity to see a player stay with one team for his whole career. As Pablo Sandoval enters free agency this offseason, he has certainly played himself into a lot of money. Although he could get more lucrative offers from teams like the Boston Red Sox, he needs to strongly consider re-signing with the San Francisco Giants.
He and the team have constantly battled over his weight issues, but when it comes down to it, he has become one of the franchise faces on a team of champions. Though they have been leery to offer him more than a three-year deal due to these concerns, it makes no sense why Sandoval would want to leave. In San Francisco, he is not only adored by the fans, but he is in a position to win a championship every season.
In the past five years, he has been a pivotal piece of their championship runs. During the 2012 postseason, he batted over .300 in both the NLDS and NLCS he was able to win the World Series MVP by batting .500 with three home runs in a four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers. This past postseason, he continued to show his ability to hit in the clutch by racking up a playoff record 26 hits.
Were it not for the remarkable performance of Madison Bumgarner, he would have almost assuredly won his second World Series MVP award.
The Giants have a track record of keeping their own, and letting Sandoval go would be a regrettable error. Without him, the team loses a third baseman and Sandoval loses part of his growing legacy. While he is one of the biggest fish in the free agent pool, he needs to be back with the Giants.
