Despite a stellar 2014 season, David Robertson may be out of a job with the New York Yankees next season. The 29-year-old didn’t have a bad season by any means, but with the emergence of the younger and cheaper Dellin Betances, Robertson may be too expense for the Yankees to hold on to.
I’m sure every single team in MLB would love to have an efficient closer who is in the prime of his career — but just like the Yankees’ mindset — teams know now that his price tag may be a little too high. Robertson proved to be great value in terms of his contract last season — he made $5.22 million in 2014. Now after his career year of posting 39 saves and a solid 3.09 ERA, Robertson is looking for a deal around $10-15 million per year.
It is being said that the Chicago Cubs are highly interested in adding Robertson to their squad in the offseason, and the move would make sense. The Cubs have the money to spend and they would love to give their new manager Joe Maddon a new welcoming present. A move to Chicago would be a great one for Robertson, he would be relieved of all the New York pressure and he would grab a big-time pay day.
Last season, the Cubs turned to Hector Rondon as their closer and he did a pretty solid job. The reliever from Venezuela finished the season with 29 saves and a great 2.42 ERA. If the Cubs were to sign Robertson, they can add even more depth to their bullpen and turn Rondon and Robertson into one of the best late inning combos in the league.
With new management and a boatload of money, a trip to Chicago would make sense for Robertson. The only problem is that the Cubs have a need for starting pitching and another bat in the lineup, so adding Robertson to the mix would be more of a luxury than a necessity for them. It should be interesting to see where the ex-Yankees reliever does land, but if he does end up in Chicago, I see him as another nice piece to the Cubs’ rebuild.
