There’s no question that the New York Mets have one of the best young pitching staffs in the league, but they can use some help on offense. The Mets have been irrelevant for quite some time in the NL East and after their Curtis Granderson signing last year, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them make another big splash in free agency.
It’s going to be a little while until the Mets become a true contender, but that doesn’t mean they can’t speed up the process. Many questioned the Mets’ decision to shell out some big cash (four years, $60 million dollars) to an outfielder who doesn’t hit for a high average and strikes out a ton, but the team wanted a spark.
Now after another disappointing season in 2014, the Mets could open up their bank again and add the talented 30-year-old Melky Cabrera.
Cabrera would make a lot of sense for the Mets. For one, he would fit in at left field and would provide some nice pop atop the Mets’ lineup in front of Granderson and their star David Wright. That’s not a bad 1-2-3 in the order if all of those players can play up to their potential. With Cabrera in the lineup, assuming they bat him at No. 1, he would give Granderson some protection and Wright another potential chance to rack up some more RBIs.
All of that sounds great, but do the Mets have the funds and confidence to sign another outfielder to a big deal?
It is being said that Cabrera is seeking a five-year deal that is worth about $65 million, and that is a pretty steep price to pay. I’m not saying that Cabrera isn’t worth that money because after his 2014 season in which he hit .301 with 16 home runs and a .808 OPS, he is worth it. Also, Cabrera was suspended 50 games in in 2012 for PED use, so teams may not feel inclined to hand out big money for that reason.
If the Mets did find a way to land Cabrera, I think that he would be worth the money.
