There is about to be a lot of moves around the MLB, as the 2014 Free Agent period is about to kickoff. There are plenty of veteran sticks hitting the market, but perhaps the most underrated bat rumored to be hitting the market this offseason is OF Nick Markakis.
Markakis has played all nine of his professional seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. He has become somewhat of a fan-favorite in the Charm City and always seemed to come up with a big hit with the O’s needed one. Unfortunately, the outfielder has yet to ink a new deal and could hit the market very soon.
The team already signed veteran SS J.J. Hardy and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the team take a similar approach with Markakis, as the O’s are currently in talks with the outfielder to sign a four-year deal. The team is obviously trying to wrap him up quickly before he tests the waters in free agency.
The veteran has played in at least 155 games in seven of the past eight seasons. He has a lifetime .290 batting average and has slugged double-digit home runs ever season of his career. He is truly an underrated bat in this high-powered offense and they would be wise to do everything possible to bring him back in 2015.
