After the Cuban explosion around the MLB right now, teams are tripping over themselves to lock up the next star from overseas.
The next big name to come to the states is Cuban OF Yasmani Tomas. The 25-year-old is making a lot of headiness right now and the slugger is currently atop the outfielders available in free agency this year.
The Boston Red Sox spent big money ($72.5 million) to bring in Cuban OF Rusney Castillo just as the season ended. He played sparingly in the final month of the season, but the team is banking on him being their centerfielder for the foreseeable future. Needless to say, there will be a big demand for Tomas this offseason.
The young thumper hit 30 home runs and 104 RBIs in 205 career games with the Industiales. He truly displayed 30-HR potential and could instantly give a team a big power bat to add to their 2015 lineup.
Just where will he land, though?
Tomas worked out for all 30 teams this June, but the San Diego Padres have also been in serious talks with the outfielder. They scouted the talented kid heavily this year and have seen him twice, working him out two separate times. They appear ready to offer Tomas a serious contract.
The team that is popping up the most, though, has been the Philadelphia Phillies. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. seems to have a man-crush on this international star and said that he is willing to pay the house for him. Since the team is officially in rebuilding mode and will do whatever it takes to bring in this kid, it is seems almost obvious that he will end up in Philadelphia in 2015.
Tomas is a serious stick and will come close to that $100 million contract he is searching for. Of all the places for him to end up, my money is on Philly.
