Jacob deGrom‘s rookie campaign was not projected to play out the way it did. Tabbed as a reliever to start the season, the (then) 25-year old made his way into the New York Mets‘ rotation via an injury. Once he got his spot, he never relinquished it.

The rookie RHP went 9-6 overall, managing an impressive 2.69 ERA in 22 starts.

Billy Hamilton and Kolten Wong both had good debut seasons as well, but not quite on par with deGrom’s. Many will point to deGrom’s finish as the reason why he locked up 2014 NL ROY. Over his last five starts, the RHP went 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA and an average of 11 strikeouts per nine innings. Certainly, the icing on his inaugural big league season cake.

The question now becomes, as it does for all players who come out of nowhere — will he just be a flash in the pan?

Here’s a look at the last 10 NL ROY award winners:

2013 – Jose Fernandez

2012 – Bryce Harper

2011 – Craig Kimbrel

2010 – Buster Posey

2009 – Chris Coghlan

2008 – Geovany Soto

2007 – Ryan Braun

2006 – Hanley Ramirez

2005 – Ryan Howard

2004 – Jason Bay
