Andrew Miller and the Detroit Tigers had two very different seasons last year. Miller was one of the best relief pitchers in baseball for the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles. Meanwhile in Detroit, the Tigers had a below average bullpen that lacked a consistent closer. But with the baseball season officially over, these two parties should join forces.
The top reason that Miller should wants to sign in Detroit is the opportunity. Miller had some of the best stats in baseball for pitchers last season, carrying an ERA of 2.02 and striking out more than 14 batters every nine innings. This made Miller virtually untouchable coming in out of the bullpen. He had the stuff to be closer on almost half of the teams in baseball, but did not get that opportunity with either the Red Sox or Orioles last year. With the Tigers having a bullpen without an elite player to shut the door, Miller could finally get the opportunity to show how dominant his stuff can be at the end of a game.
Along with the opportunity to be a closer, Miller could get paid like a closer in Detroit. The Tigers are a big-market team not afraid to spend money. The front office in Detroit knows that they have a big need in their bullpen and will spend that money to fix it. Miller is just as, if not more, effective as other closers on the market and he did not receive a qualifying offer, meaning there is no draft pick compensation tied to him. This should make him an even more attractive target for the Tigers, meaning they’ll give him a lot of money to sign.
The final reason Miller should consider going to Detroit is the prestige of the team. The Tigers win the AL Central almost every single year and seem to always move deep into the playoffs. The goal of every player is to win a World Series and going to a team like the Tigers would go a long way in helping Miller get that ring.
Everything seems too good for Miller not to strongly consider joining the Tigers. He would have the opportunity to become the team’s closer while getting paid a lot of money and contending for a World Series almost every season. It’s hard to ask for anymore than that when you are a star relief pitcher and for these reasons, it is likely that Miller will take a long look at the Tigers this winter.
