Chase Headley, now a free agent, was traded from the San Diego Padres to the New York Yankees near the trade deadline. When he put on the pin stripes, he produced, filling a need at third base. Now, it makes sense for him to return to the Yankees in 2015.
Before the All-Star break, Headley was hitting .226 with 7 home runs and 29 RBIs in 266 games, and after the break, he hit .265 with six home runs and 20 RBIs in 204 games. A change of scenery really did help Headley; he gave the Yankees a nice boost when he joined the club. Headley was a consistent presence at third base too, and, best of all, he was clutch. Headley had multiple game-winning hits when the pressure was on, and it seemed like the New York lights did not bother him one bit.
With the inevitable return of Alex Rodriguez, the third base position is still up for grabs. If Rodriguez does return to the Yankees, they could play him at DH and rotate the two back and forth at third base when one needs a day off.
It’s being said that the Yankees are very interested in bringing Headley and that he has become the team’s “top priority.”
The Yankees could get Headley pretty cheaply, too. Last season he made $10.25 million, but considering that he’s 30 years old with his best baseball behind him, his price tag shouldn’t be too expensive. There’s no doubt that the Yankees need a solid insurance policy behind Rodriguez, and I think that Headley would be the perfect fit if he did return back to the Bronx.
