The Boston Red Sox have plenty of holes to fill; that was very apparent during their disappointing 2014 season, but they also have the money to fill most of those holes this offseason. While they’ll surely shell out the cash for a solid pitcher or two, getting a third baseman who can provide power and be a strong presence in the postseason is a must.
That brings to mind Pablo Sandoval, who acted like he didn’t know how to make an out this past World Series. He’s a free agent and even though the San Francisco Giants are seen as the favorites to land him, the Red Sox could outbid them if they decide they really want him.
They should want him because their third base production last year was laughable. In the little time that once promising Will Middlebrooks did play, he hit just .191 while showing absolutely no signs of improvement. It’s becoming increasingly obvious the team needs a long-term solution at third base.
Clearly, Sandoval is the best option for them there. If you thought the Red Sox were clutch in the playoffs whenever they’re there, just imagine them adding Sandoval, who has been one of the most clutch performers in October over the last five seasons?
There’s no doubt the Red Sox will add pitching, but they have money to do much more than that. Getting the slugger that was missing from their lineup last season is what they need to spend that extra money on. With the Giants sure to push hard to retain him, that extra cost could end up being pretty high.
