In case you’ve been living under a rock over the past year or so, legendary New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter retired after this past season. That means the Bronx Bombers need to replace him and they shouldn’t settle for anything less than the best. They have several options to replace him, but as the Yankees, they should shell out the dough and prospects to once again have the best shortstop in the game.
Since the Colorado Rockies have made star Troy Tulowitzki available in the trade market, the Yankees have to seriously consider making an offer. In fact, landing Tulowitzki should be their top offseason priority. He would give them a big bat in the middle of the order and a solid fielder in the middle infield, even if his price tag is high.
They would likely have to give up two out of their top three pitching prospects, but it’s worth it for the Yankees to capitalize on the rare opportunity to lock up one of the elite shortstops in baseball. Especially with the uncertainty surrounding Alex Rodriguez, they could use some stability in the infield. A healthy Tulowitzki would provide just that.
The Yankees have never been a team to pull any punches in the name of winning and that should be no different this offseason. They are one of a few organizations that can afford to build their team almost solely through free agency and trades, so they can afford to give up the young pitching.
If they’re focused on winning in 2015 and sustaining success for years to come, dealing for Tulowitzki is the move the Yankees need to pull the trigger on.
