The Toronto Blue Jays have already filled their biggest need of the offseason by signing Russell Martin and finally solidifying the catching position. With that move made, the Blue Jays now need to shift their focus to the bullpen and filling their closer role. Signing free-agent lefty Andrew Miller needs to become their top priority.
As it currently stands, the Blue Jays’ roster is void of a closer. Miller has never pitched in that role before, but as the best reliever on the market, he certainly has the talent to step in and get the job done. Last season with both the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox, Miller was impressive. In 73 appearances, he went 5-5 with a 2.02 ERA. He was even better late in the season with Baltimore as he went 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA as an Oriole.
After being drafted in the first round as a starter, Miller has found his niche as a reliever posting a 3.38 ERA and holding opposing hitters to a .197 batting average against in his 193 appearances. By signing the 29-year-old left-hander, the Blue Jays would not only have a pitcher who is more than ready to carry the work load of closing, but they also are able to keep Miller from signing with many of there division rivals who have been rumored to also be showing interest in him.
The Blue Jays have already made a move to bring in the best catcher available to fill a need, and now it is time to bring the best reliever north of the border too. In the AL East, it is always tough for teams to keep up with the New York Yankees and Red Sox, but signing Miller helps the Blue Jays move toward that path.
