Unfortunately, someone in the sports world coming out as gay still counts as news. It’s 2014, multiple people have done it, it’s not that big of a deal — but it’s still considered a story. So, here it is.
Long-time MLB umpire Dale Scott recently allowed a photo of him and his partner of nearly 30 years to be used in Referee magazine, and with that, the cat was out of the bag. That’s it. A really good umpire prefers men over women. Has it affected his ability to officiate games? Will it impact him on the field moving forward? Absolutely not.
But because Scott is the first ever MLB ump to come out as gay, it’s a story.
Good for Dale Scott, and here’s to hoping he stays happily married to his gay lover for as long as they both shall live. If you have a problem with an umpire being a homosexual, you’re an idiot.
